How Personal is your Knowledge of Jesus?

The biggest issue in the religious world today can be summarized in three words: Who is Jesus? In the past few years several best-selling books have radically challenged what people believe about Jesus. From that, another 35 or 40 books were spawned, all either affirming or refuting the basic premise of who Christ really is. Among Christians and non-Christians alike, there’s been quite a stir recently, and I believe that’s rooted in something deeper than just the 45 million copies sold on the subject.

There’s a movement going on that raises the question “Who is Jesus, really?”

In the Gospel of Mark, Mark is addressing a Roman audience. Chapter eight is the apex of the book, and in Mark 8:27-29, while walking with his disciples and Jesus asks his disciples two important questions. He says, “Who do people say that I am?” Then he asked, “Who do YOU say that I am?”

Before examining their response, it’s important to look at WHY Jesus poses these questions to his disciples, the very people who arguably knew him best.

A genuine relationship begins with an accurate view of the other person. Whether it’s dating, friendship or a business relationship, perception is a foundational component. Have you ever been in a relationship with someone you thought you knew well only to have a piece of information surface that somehow calls into question their character or motive? The outcome in this scenario is rarely good.

Jesus understood that when it came to his disciples, the men who would be responsible for transforming the entire world that first and foremost, they had to know with their whole heart, and with their entire mind the answer to the question “Who is this Jesus?”

As a follower of Jesus, you need to be able to answer the same question.

I don’t mean habitual agreement with the stories you’ve been taught from childhood. What I mean is when the question arises “Who is Jesus, really?” you should have an intellectual and a heart response that’s based on absolute conviction resulting from your own research and evaluation. It’s impossible to have a relationship with Christ without firsthand knowledge of who Jesus is, what he’s done, what he’s said and the evidence that supports these truths.

Why is this so important? Because just as in Christ’s time on earth, there are many views on who Jesus really is. The question is isn’t a new one, and it isn’t unique. Your answer, however, is essential to the vitality and authenticity of your life as a follower of Christ.

This week we’re beginning a new series called “Who is Jesus, Really? Man, Myth or Messiah?” Through it, we’ll take a 360-degree look at the makeup of Jesus. We’ll weigh the evidence against popular opinion and take a deeper look at how the actions and words of Christians influence others on the matter.

My prayer for you is that this study will challenge you to conduct your own investigation of who Jesus really is. As you do, you’ll discover new conviction that’s based in your personal knowledge of the Son of God. Understanding the truth about the very essence of who Jesus is will forever transform your life, empower your relationship with God and equip you to share that joy with others.

Keep Pressin’ On,

Chip

Thank you for your wonderful teaching titled “Who Do Men Say I Am? – Who is Jesus, Really?” on your Free Resources list. I have studied much, but your teaching is extremely good and a must for anyone seeking understanding. It helps the listener to see Him more clearly, based on what bible reveals, but also helps the listener to understand who he is NOT and all the false information that is out there in the world today about Jesus. Thanks for the amazing ways you teach the bible so that we are able to apply it more effectively to our lives and respond to the world with counter culture messages given in love.

Matthew 16:16

1John 4:12

Matthew 5:8

1 Cor 2:1-2

1 Tim 2:5-6

When I minister before someone, my Christian brothers hear me say that Jesus is the Son of God sent to this world to redeem us and I see the frustration building in my brothers faces and then they quickly snap back, “Jesus IS God”.

This is very dangerous ground. Its just a moot discussion for now while in a fallen state. Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, our redemption is the focus and was the focus of Paul in 1 Cor 2:1-2.

To simply throw around Jesus is God really makes alot of trouble for those who believe we need a Mediator.

I am in Christ and he is in me while he is in God and God is in him. This shows the mediation aspect and also the true vine.

If Jesus IS God, then we don’t go THROUGH him.
If Jesus IS God, then we have no mediator.
If Jesus IS God, then he deceived us while he sat right in front of us telling us that the pure at heart would see God.
If Jesus is God, then 1John 4:12 is wrong because people saw Jesus.

How about this…..How about we say Jesus Christ shares an equality with God that is beyond my understanding. Also, we can say that we know he was given the position and dominion as “god of this world” as Satan had by 2 Cor 4:4. It is the same word, yet our editors chose to capitalize it by thier own understanding.

Jesus will return to remove Satan from his dominion of which he holds the title as god of this world. Remember Satan had it and offered it to Jesus to just bow down and worship him. Its Jesus’ now and he comes to collect.

Most importantly we repeat what our teacher taught…..There is a God, he sent his Son, Jesus. He is our redemption, mediator, and King.

Jesus is the Christ the son of the living God and second person of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost); thus Jesus is God.

jwbflyer   on April 2nd, 2010

Jesus didn’t teach the trinity but only the first half of your comment Bob, respectfully.

Niether did Paul.

Great wisdom in staying away from lofty doctrines not taught by the Son of God.

Was it:
I am in Jesus and he is in me, just as he is in God and God is in him so that we may all be perfectly one?

Or was it:
I am in God and God is in me, just as God is in God and God in him, so that we may all be perfectly one?

Jesus shares an equality WITH God that is beyond yours and my comprehension…..yet we pretend to comprehind it, teach it, and then require folks to know it.

Maybe not this ministry, but my observations of todays church is in a sequential phase of deception that is the next phase of the trinity, worshipping a man. I have been told that if I do not accept the trinity, I am without salvation! By many Trinitarians.

You hasve 3 choices, pick only one.
A) Jesus did not die on the cross.
B) Jesus died and is God, therefore God died on the cross.
C) Jesus shares an equality WITH God that was seperated on the cross for our sins and the MAN, Jesus died that day.

That moment where Jesus committs his spirit to God, who/where is God?

If you are Mary Magdalyn, 2,000 years ago, and the resurrected Jesus is standing before you and he says “Tell them I am going to your Father and my Father, your God and my God”. Where is God?

Respectfully, you can go around and continue to teach the world about God, I’ll teach about Jesus.
1Cor2:1-2

Immanuel, God with us, Have you been with me so long at yet you do not see? I understand the debate. I was raised on one end, and am choosing the other. I would say, this is a safe sermon, but once you know Him…. your sermon might change again.

jwbflyer, So what do you do with Scriptures like John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”… 1:14 – “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us”. John is obviously referring to Jesus and saying He’s God.

Also, John 10:30-33 ‘Jesus answered them, “I and My Father are one.” Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?” The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.”’ The Jews knew that Jesus was claiming to be God and wanted to kill Him for it. Jesus is either God or He’s a liar.

jwbflyer   on April 8th, 2010

trianglepromos,

Why does the use of the scripture you used (John 10:30-33), where the Jews were going to stone Jesus, always end at that last scriptural sentence you wrote (v33) and then the commentary begins? Fact is as soon as the Jews said this Jesus said that they were to. We can change capitalizations and so on, but the root word remains the same, It was our editors who chose the capitalize and lowercase. Not saying they were wrong because he could be capitalized when referenced as “God” because of the spirit within him is God and we “gods” are not where Jesus is yet and are fallen. I do not have all of the answers but Jesus immediately retaliated with a staement of unity in this use of God.

I did not come on here to say Jesus is God or is not God. I came on here to say that, respectfully to others, I believe the trinity is a moot point doctrine that is growing in deception.

Jesus did not think his equality WITH God was a thing to be grasped, yet I am now being told by ministers, elders, and members that if I do not confess the trinity, I have no salvation. Do you honestly believe Turtullian and that salvation lies with a doctrine so hard to understand? This is prime for God fooling anyone who puts academic weight on the issue of salvation.

It is my belief that there was an original intent and growing development of Man in the Garden that was significantly side-tracked by one who did not like what our position was to be above him….the image of God to the created realm/universe.

Satan was God/god…(same word).

Do you really believe that Lucifer offers our God anything? Do you really believe Lucifer tempts our God? Lucifer was tempting a man who chose to align himself with his Father’s will above all else to include his own life.

Do you really believe that God cries and prays to himself for guidance and direction in the garden?

Brother it is my opinion that John 1:1 is a chronological statement that sums up the entire story. Jesus existed before he was a man…in my opinion as a spiritual existence WITH God that is beyond the physical realm and therefore beyond our physical limitations and understanding. Jesus is the law, he is the word, he is the architect that God created everything THROUGH, FOR, and BY. I summarize it like this: God is the baker, Jesus is the cookie cutter, and the physical known and unknown creation is the cookie. You can’t boil water without the laws of thermodynamics….Jesus. This is how I see him holding all things together.

So, I believe that Jesus existed before he was a man, eternally and divinely, sharing IN God.

I also believe that there is a great deception in the world not wanting God’s creation of Man to know his true intent to be the rulers of the physical realm.

Satan tempted Jesus and offered him his worldy kingdoms. I believe that he did this because he knew what the promise was to be as the “heir”. Jesus refused, completed his mission; the will of OUR Father and was given his power, dominion, and authority as G/god of this world. Same position Lucifer had but now in the rightful hands of the intended ruler, a man, the highest of creation, the image of God. Jesus comes to evict him soon.

It is in this story we see Co-heirs with Jesus, heirs of God.

You may believe something different and you are completely and respectfully entitled to it. But we should be truth seekers and there is only one truth. This is why I lay down any doctrine “given” to me by men and seek for myself. I will lay down everything in my search for truth except God sent his son and he IS Jesus, my salvation.

You asked, so to conclude, I believe John 1:1 is a chronological, one sentence summary of the entire story. Jesus was annointed as ruler of the world and will return to claim his bride. The Jews stoning Jesus because he was making a man God does not stop there, Jesus immediately retaliated with you are to. It is my opinion that in that COMPLETE story the Jews say Jesus claims to be God and he retaliates with a statement of them being the same claim also, a unifying statement.

Is Jesus a liar? I challenge anyone to show me without commentary any place Jesus TAUGHT the trinity and Jesus TAUGHT he was God. If you can’t find his TEACHINGS on this subject then why do we teach it? “I and the Father are one”. Well folks, “I and Jesus are one”. But that doesn’t make me Jesus. When I do the works of my Lord and keep his commandments, I and Jesus are one.

Jesus eluded to things that have much human commentary pigy-backed onto. What was important was very clearly taught. I choose to teach those things.

QUESTION:
If Jesus is God because of his statement that “I and the Father are one”, then according to the true vine and high priestly prayer, aren’t we too God? We know that not to be the case. Because, you see I am in Jesus and he is in me, just as he is in the FATHER, and he is in Jesus, so that we may all be perfectly one. It is my belief that the Father ALONE is God and unfallen, we share a spiritual bond/equality IN him, but since we are fallen, it must be through Jesus who is in him so that there is now a link back to God who is only eternal and how we have eternal life.

So, trianglepromos, you may disagree with my opinions and I want to be very clear when I say this:

I love you and want to be with you more than against you. I just think we should keep a strict alignment with the clear teachings of Jesus, but that is my opinion brother.

—————————————
Rachael, the bible also teaches of Jesus being the vessel of God. If God was in him via spirit, and can’t be with us due to the fall, isn’t God truely with us if he is IN Jesus? Jesus is the lamp and God is the light in the lamp. Colossians 2:9 “For IN him all the fullness of the Godhead DWELLETH, bodily”. IN him! How do you see the invisible God unless it is by watching the physical man Jesus show us how we can know the secret God and see the invisible God.

How can 10 lepers be healed by Jesus and then 9 turn and go tell others while one falls at the feet of Jesus and worship God? Doesn’t the bible teach no one has ever seen God? (1John4:12) How can this be? I use this which helps me undestand this point of Jesus being the image of the invisible God.

Take yourself and another person into a room.
Put a large mirror on the center of one wall.
Hang or imagine there is a curtain in the room symbolizing the fall and seperation.
Place this curtain in the center of the room where it bisects the room and only by looking into the mirror can you see the other half of the room.
Now, take the other person and call them “God”.
Call yourself “Man”.
Place God in one half of the room and you in the other.
You cannot see God directly, to you he is invisible.
Where in the room do you look to see God? The mirror.
Look into the eyes of God and say, “I love you”.
Who did you say this to, the mirror or God? God.
How many Gods are in the room? 1
How many images are in the room? 1 now but many later! (Firstborn from the grave and coheirs).
Who is the mirror? 1 Timothy2:5 “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.

We are to be images of Jesus who dwells in us as he is the image of God who dwells in him, until our resurection and the emergence of the sons of God. Then, fully reconciled, those judged worthy may be given power, dominion, and authority according to their works in faith.

It is my opinion that Jesus Christ/Yeshua HaMashiach is the Son of the Living God. He is an eternal being by sharing IN God and was without fall like us. He was given by his walk on Earth, power and dominion over it. Everything about him is an example to me to strive for, not so much the glory, but the work here. My salvation is only dependant on my faith, but my rewards in my eternal existence are dependant on my works of faith. What I sow will be planted in death by my body that is a seed and it will sprout according to what was sown.

I believe that Jesus is God of this world and shares an equality with Father God beyond mortal comprehension, but the one and only God alone is the Father who is invisible, who no one has ever seen, and dwelled IN Jesus, just as Jesus dwells in me.

I do not believe the trinity existed on the cross where Jesus suffered a seperation from Father God, for the first time in eternity, symbolized by the splitting of time. It is in that moment he fully exemplified us in our fallen state, but not by his fault, he is blameless. I also do not believe the trinity will exist post resurrection (or post Mellinial Reign)as many will have the direct connection to God and the spirit of God will dwell directly in again, without need of mediation and they will be brothers, coheirs with Jesus as Sons of God!

Love you guys, Peace

His name is Emmanuel – God with us.

julre

Thanks for entering into this discussion with us.

You are exactly right! The issue/discussion here is that I do not worship a man, “son of man” but do worship an invisible spirit “God” who Jesus shares an equality with, known as “Son of God”.

This is precisely why we are not suppose to have any image before him, in my opinion…. No one has ever seen God!

Take care

Hello again. I am relatively new to blogging so please excuse my lack of experience.

When I first read this particular blog I felt threatened. After thinking about what was put forth and praying about it and searching the scriptures I have a less of a reactionary response.

I appreciate the opportunity to examine my own personal theology in light of blogging debate and be made to question what I believe and exactly why.

Thank you. I would encourage any who as I are inexperienced in putting their own testimony into words to challenge their own faith in light of the Word. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth to you as Jesus said. Then by all means, tell somebody.

So here I go practicing…who is Jesus? Jesus is the Christ. He is the way to the Father. What does that mean?

God the Father made man in His image that we may have fellowship with Him. Man turned from God and chose sin. This separated man from God. God sent his son Jesus to take our place so we could return to fellowship with the Father. Jesus was without sin and that is why he was qualified to become the Lamb of God. He gave himself for our sins. He took our punishment on himself on the cross. Because he paid the price for us, we are now able to come to the Father. Not only did he die in our place, he rose again. That means death is not the end. Jesus said he would come back for his own. If you accept what Jesus did for you, you become one of his own.

How did I do? I’m still in the learning stages. It sounds a little like I’m merely spouting the tapes that have been ingrained in my head through Sunday School, the bible, teachings etc. My hope is the more I share, the more I make sense and the testimony comes from my heart.

Oh my goodness. This is new to me. All I know is I pray to God and Jesus. When I think I have disappointed God, my way back is through Jesus. He is my leader and speaker to our Father. Jesus is my devine friend who make all well and show me the way. That holy spirit surrounds me with everything good and helps Jesus keep me safe.

That is the most important thing written on this entire blog.

Theology, doctrines, wise scholarly learned folks don’t mean jack in heaven if they don’t love and live the way.
